the group presentation of our project- ideas???

hey

-----in thinking about ideas for how to bring our project together first week back as a collective-------

in case you haven't seen it, last years one is on vizlang here;

11:57

PAPER-
lucy shot footage, theres the family portrait and story footage, andrew, rebecca, lena and I all have taken images, plus also the corinne, neil and stevie paper video

some sort of dvd could be good along side our blog?

plus also all our FM work- maybe we should have 2 sections to a dvd one of PAPER and one with examples of the FM work we each made, commentary etc etc

thoughts?

xx

Hey there,

wow so on the case - guys looks like you did an amazing job and i hear it was a good night ! I think the documentation of the group project and FM should definately be separate the FM stuff is something separate altogether- and maybe we can document our experiences of that individually and wholly at a later stage -i know that its going to be a busy time when we get back getting everything ready for the assement stage - i'm going to want to be pulling together my own work as well installing it and the group project and critical studies....blah blah.

I have a lot of other footage of the video peice - some of when i started to work on it by myself then the first draft when neil and stevie and i were all working on it together as well as the finished peice - some very funny out takes - i've also got some nice stills of the studio in progress (in addition to the one's here) as well as some sketches etc that i know everyone else must have too so i'm sure we can cobble them together into something lovely! don't have the photo's with me so will have to wait until i'm back in old blighty

massive well done again!

Props for Family Portraits

What sorts of objects make you think of:

a) family (as a general idea)
b) a particular family member's role (ie "father" "newborn" "aunt" "grandmother")
c) something that undermines conventional notions of either a) or b)

?

If you actually *have* any of these objects, please bring them in!

Group Project

hey

just in case you didn't find out about this, doug has agreed to help us all next week on the project- bringing it all together, any modifications, final touches, tech support etc etc which is great. Meeting 10am in the studio on Monday, bring everything you have so far and hope you are able to be there all week or as much as you can.

I'm looking forward to it- we have a lots of great skills and ideas and work made so far- this is the last burst to making it into the terrific show which it has the potential to be :)

see you then- if not at the intimacy events at goldsmiths!

Intimacy Forum - Publicity opportunity

Hi everyone,

Reminder about this event happening at Goldsmiths this weekend. The talks and workshops sound very interested and relevant to the work that alot of us are doing:

http://www.goldsmiths.ac.uk/intimacy/

Also and excellent opportunity to publicize our group show, so it would be great if I had a huge stack of fliers to hand out to people. Would love to increase contact with other courses similar to ours in London.

See you all around school. I'll be in all day every day this week. As usual....

Buffet Area

I think we haven't talked about the buffet area much yet and I have notes from FrenchMottershead.

It is not actially complicated decision though, we need to decide which kinds of food we are going to contribute, we were also talking about international food as Sally, Neil and I have different culture but I'm not sure on this idea.

In terms of buying food, we need to think about budget. Let's talk about it when everyone is at the college.

Another thing for this area, I heard Corinne, Stevie and Neil's how to video is going to be in this area and how do we manage them in this area?

Any thought? I would like to talk about it on monday if poeple could come to the college. or tuesday?

Thursday's run through.

This is for everyone to enjoy...

Plan so far for the show

I've been trying to get the performance so far into steps to make it a little easier. Below is what has been done so far, obviously we are going to do a run through tomorrow so this will probably change but thought that I would post it anyway to give everyone a chance to see what's been going on and comment.

* Audience start in canteen where there is wine and food, the video and the paper accessorise for them to dress up in.

* The 'Hostess' moves a few people from the canteen into the studio spaces where they will encounter the paper buffet (real food to be added sporadically throughout the performance). They will then be ushered into Room 1 where there are costumes, backdrops and props. They will be asked by the 'photographer' to pick a family and have a family portrait taken. The portrait will be projected in Room 2 in the picture frame above the mantle piece.

* In Room 2 there is the living room area with the diorama, the dressing room, and a station where the 'Activity Cards' are.

* Once the audience has had a chance to play, the 'Actors' (who have been mingling so far as themselves) approach a member of the audience and give them an invitation card. The actor then takes the audience member to the dressing room to change into costume (once they are in the dressing room the light inside is switched on to create a shadow which is thrown onto the dressing room door)

* The audience member then has the 'Actor' for a full 15 minuets. Should they be stuck for something to do with the Actor they are free to take one 'Activity Card' to help them. The 'Actor' will not help the audience member think of something to do. When the 15  is over, the actor will return to the station, dress, and find someone else to give an invitation to.

How to end the performance or how to try and descend in to chaos is still been worked on so if anybody has any thoughts or ideas! Below is just an idea but see what you think..

* The 'Hostess' decides that Room 1 needs to be moved into Room 2 because it needs to be cleaned and tidied! She politely but firmly requests that the audience members that are in there help her to move and tidy it.

* Once the photography station is in Room 2 the activities and stations become muddled. For example, the projection could swing round onto the dressing room door and the 'Actors' could start filming and projecting themselves, taking over the stories that were being played out by the diorama.

* When the 'Hostess' starts to see where people are 'disobeying' she starts to getting irate and throwing people out; subtly at first then removing the whole audience.

We were talking about having voice recordings taken in the dressing room and played back else where in the space (as a side thought)

I hope that this kind of represents what is going on at the moment - I know that people have also been thinking about making set and costume so if any of this clashes with that or if people have other ideas that they think would work better then post them on.

See you all soon

Group show - Lena's notes, please share thoughts.

Hi everyone,

Will probably talk to most of you over the next couple of days, but am putting notes here for feedback and internet-based discussion. Please let me know if you can help out with any of the components I've outlined below. I won't be able to get this all done myself foir this Thursday. I've already booked the A/V equipment that I know we need.

1) DIORAMA

Summary: We are planning on collecting stories from members of the college that describe a "domestic drama." We will then create 5-10 dioramas, complete with main characters, key props and location backdrop, that we will place in separate envelopes. Audience members will choose from among these envelopes and act out the drama using the diorama on the night of the performance. The audience members are not necessarily the people who wrote the stories. The acting out of the story will be shown on a TV in a mock-living room set that other audience members can watch.

To Do for Thursday:

  • collect some test stories through several different methods:

a) anonymous submission box with written instructions
(instructions need to be written)

b) one on one interviews where we describe the project
(script to be written)

c) I interview people on video camera.
(Audience would watch video of story at the performance.)

  • select a story from each collection method and create dioramas based on them
(what style for diorama? full color? black and white photocopy? marker drawings?
  • get living room components: TV, sofa or comfy chairs, carpet (coffee table? lamp?)
(ask the set/props department. Anyone know who to talk to there? or where it is?!)

Other notes:

  • What do you think about having the people acting out the story put cut out photos of their heads (like the ones I did for Andrew and Rebecca last week) on the paper doll characters? I think it might add an interesting dimension and technically shouldn't be hard to set up a digital camera, laptop and inkjet printer for these photos to be taken on the night of the show.
  • We'll need someone to be overseeing this area on the night of the show. Any thoughts on a character for this person? or just basic tech support?

2) FAMILY PORTRAIT

Summary: a portrait studio will be set up with a Photographer. Audience members will be invited to choose their family from the other guests to pose for their "ideal family portrait". A live video feed will be showing this process in a gilt frame placed as part of the set in the living room/diorama area. Would also be nice to have a real camera (Polaroid? Digital hooked up to a printer?) so that participants can take a copy of the photo home with them.

To Do for Thursday:

  • create or find a paper backdrop like the ones used in professional photography studios
  • consider the character of the Photographer (Harriet, do you want to be this character? I think you'd be great for it!)
  • obtain a gilt frame, or create a marker drawn one. Should match the style of the rest of the living room set

Other notes:

  • does anyone have an inkjet printer that we could use to test this out? I can use my laptop for the photo gathering.

3) THE HOSTESS and GENERAL

Questions for consideration and feedback:

  • How is the show unfolding? Will there be parts that people can't access until later on? or is it all open?
  • Will the Hostess be leading people to the different areas? Doing general crowd control?
  • Will there be others wandering amongst the guests inviting them to participate in the different areas?
  • Are we serving any real food and/or drink? How much of a party atmosphere do we want to create?
  • Are we getting clear on what is linking the different elements together? Does is seem like different perspectives on the same issue? Is it something other than this that is holding it together?
  • Words Andrew said last Thursday that came across as themes for him from what he saw: CHOICE, PROJECTION, RESPONSIBILITY

My schedule for the next few days. Call me or text if you want to meet up.
Lena is free to mee and at Wimbledon:

End of Term Show

Hello again,

I was just wondering how everybody was feeling about the end of term show? I feel a little like we have inadvertently  gone back to our individual things and trying to link them together, which is what we had agreed that we weren't going to do.

Does everyone think that this will work best? Is it possible to work things into one piece of work or is that what we already have?

My personal feeling is that I would like us all to work on one big thing and perhaps take different roles and responsibilities in that - but don't know if that is too much of a step backwards? Or maybe everybody is happy with where we got to yesterday?

I thought that maybe it is best to think about it a bit now so we don't spend too long discussing it tomorrow.

See you all soon.

Group warm-ups at Tate on Weds?

Hello again,

I am definitely planning on doing some group exercises (performance-related, not aerobic!) before we visit the exhibit at the Tate Modern on Wednesday.

We'll meet in the Turbine Hall (main entrance) at 10.30am.

Who's in?

Intimacy Forum

Hi everyone,

I just signed up for some seminars and workshops at this conference/symposium/etc. that is being held at the beginning of December. I like the blend of hands on workshop and seminars, so hopefully it will be interesting and is certainly addressing topics that are relevant to our work. Also nice because you can sign up and pay for just the parts you want to attend instead of for full days.

Here's the link:

Liverpool Trip- Who wants to go and shall we book tickets together?

The entire MA is planning a trip to Liverpool on Wednesday December 12th 2007 to see:
Turner Prize
A Foundation
Walker Art Gallery
The plan is to meet on the ground floor of the Walker Art Gallery at 1PM:
There is a train that leaves from Euston Station at 10:15 and gets into Liverpool at 12:47 – the Walker Art Gallery is not far from Liverpool Lime Street Station.
We need to be at Tate Liverpool at 2PM. Our entry into the Turner Prize is ticketed so we all need to go together. If you are late in coming to the Walker Art Gallery please meet us at the Tate.
Bryony Bond is one of the curators at the A Foundation and she will give us a talk after our visit to the Turner Prize.

Venue/ Time Issues Re Show

hello - Just thought that i'd let you know that i went to that meeting with Kate - The marketing officer on friday which was actually about the end of year and interim shows and there was quite a lot of info that came out of it which seems really relevant to us. Firstly for each hour that the college remains open after college hours you have to pay a caretaker £30 an hour - and the number of caretakers you need depends on how many of us there are - if there was us and 30 guests it could cost us £120 per hour that the college was open, - so the reaction then seems to be that it shouldn't be in the evening but i also found out that painting pathway have also been told that they are having an end of term exhibition on the same day so we may have real space issues. sorry to be the bearere of bad news but atleast if we know this now we can work around it.

I also just wanted to let you know that in light of doug proposing the wedesday afternoon/ evening classess and time dwindling away especially becuase for those of us are planning to work on the monday and tuesday i have suggested that personally i feel we could use some/one of the thursdays with rebecca and andrew to work on the project - especially as they know so much about audience reactions/participations and practically where to get things etc and seemed to ask really interesting questions re everone's work and proposals on thursday - i made it clear that this was just my opinion but i would like to know what eveyone feels anyway?

Just reconfirming:

Have I got it right?
Will you be there?
